How to find accommodation in France?

Accommodation in France

One of the most stressful parts of your journey to study in France is finding accommodation. It is a process that is difficult, long and that can be nerve-wracking. You might have many questions: When to start looking for accommodation in France? How much is accommodation in France? What are the different accommodation options in France?

Don’t worry, we are here to give you tips and solutions to all of the challenges you might face!

When to find accommodation in France

To find accommodation in France, the first thing that you need to remember is not to wait until the last minute to start looking. You should start searching as early as you can

The best period to begin your searches is between May and July, as it is the end of the school year. Keep in mind that the majority of students will probably start looking for accommodation in August, so it will become more difficult.

Starting in September and until around the Christmas period will be even more difficult to find housing. Since the school year will have already started, there won’t be as many accommodations offered.

Usually, it takes several weeks to find accommodation, and it is a little bit longer in Paris.

How much is accommodation in France?

As we would expect, living in Paris and living in another smaller city in France are very different in terms of price. Accommodation in Paris will be more expensive than anywhere else. If you want some tips about how to find cheap accommodation offers in Paris, we have an article about it.

Let’s take some examples:

For the CROUS, which is the cheapest accommodation option: around 400€/month if you are in Paris, and 200€/month in other cities.

For a private apartment, which is the most expensive option: it starts at around 800€/month in Paris, and 500€ in other cities

For a shared apartment: it is around 600€/month in Paris and around 450€/month in other cities.

What are the different accommodation options?

Student residences

You have 2 kinds of student residences, those that are publicly owned, and are managed by France’s regional centers, also called CROUS. They are very known among students as they are often cheaper. However, it is also pretty difficult to get an apartment in a CROUS residence. Since many students want one, there is high competition.

You also have private student residences, which are more expensive but that also have more advantages and facilities (group life, furnished rooms, internet, gym, laundry facilities, etc) than a CROUS residence, such as Studélites or Estudines

Rent a private apartment/studio

This is probably the most expensive option, especially if you are in Paris. But if you want to live alone, it is a good solution.

Shared apartment

You can divide the costs of the rent of an accommodation by sharing it with someone else. It is also a great way to make new friends.

Host family

A great experience if you want to fully discover the French culture! You’ll be welcomed by a French family that will be here if you need help during your stay. This experience will make you discover France from another point of view.

When looking for your accommodation, you should be careful of potential scams, as there are many. Pay attention when you find an offer that seems too good to be true. For example, an accommodation in Paris that has a rent of less than 500€. You can refer to the price examples above.

What are the necessary documents?

It will depend on the accommodation option that you choose, but in general, these are the documents that are asked for:

  • Your ID card
  • Residency permit
  • Student card and proof of enrollment for the current year
  • Letter from the guarantor and proof of guarantor’s identity. If you don’t know what a guarantor is or how to find one in France, we suggest you read this article.
