Choosing complementary health insurance can be a challenging task if you are unfamiliar with the French healthcare system. Indeed, the French Social Security system doesn’t provide full coverage for all your medical expenses so to ensure enhanced coverage, opting for complementary health insurance might be necessary.
First, Complementary Health Insurance (also called Mutual) requires having a Social Security number. So, you have to register with Social Security first (Feel Francais do it for you).
Then it has different levels of guarantees, with prices between 9,90€ and 49€ per month. Depending on your medical needs, you can choose the one that suits you best.
In this article, we provide you with information about our two partners HEYME and STUDCORP specialize for foreigners students, with English websites. You can compare the two companies and choose to subscribe to one.
These two companies also offer Private/Travel health insurance. Check this article to understand if you are concerned and how you can apply for one.
🏥 Why apply for complementary health insurance?
🩺 Being 100% covered: with public health insurance, you will only be covered by 70% of doctors from sector 1.
🧑⚕️ In France, there are two types of doctors: sector 1 (who practice the price of the government) and sector 2 (practice their price).
Check beforehand the sector of your doctor. When you see a doctor from Sector 1 you will still have to pay 30%.
For example, a consultation with a generalist from sector 1 = €25 (price fixed by the government) so after a refund, you still have spent €7,5 (the 30% rest).
A consultation with a generalist from sector 2 = €50 so after a refund, you still have spent €32,5 (the 30% rest is based on the price from sector 1).
⛑ The cheapest complementary insurance refunds you 100% so the remaining part if you go to see a doctor from sector 1. Some offer refunds up to 130%, 150%… to cover a part of the fees of doctors from sector 2. The most covering options are the ones that offer refunds from 90 to 100% of the real price spent.
Even if you go to see only doctors from sector 1, is still important to get a complementary because if you have a hospitalization the bill will be still expensive for you to pay: 108€/night for a shared room, €468/night for a private room, and €608 for surgery… And the hospital is refunded only at 70%.
Most French people pay complementary insurance for life. We suggest you subscribe to complementary health insurance to avoid issues. You are also covered for rapatriement, psychiatry care, an individual room at the hospital, and an ambulance.

Comparison table between HEYME and STUDCORP

It’s crucial to note that individuals planning hospitalization should subscribe to the insurance at least one month before their anticipated hospitalization date. Many plans, such as Heyme, impose a one-month waiting period for hospitalization, unless it’s due to an accident. This means that individuals cannot have an accident and subscribe to the insurance on the same day, so it’s essential to plan ahead and ensure coverage aligns with your healthcare needs.
