Private/Travel Health Insurance is a comprehensive insurance policy that provides coverage for medical expenses, healthcare services, and emergency medical situations. Unlike the standard public health insurance offered by the government, this type of insurance is typically obtained from private insurance companies.
This insurance is particularly valuable for students who require coverage before obtaining their public health insurance, or for those seeking additional protection beyond what the public health insurance offers. Moreover, in some countries, the visa center may require private/travel health insurance, valid for the first 3 months, as part of the documentation for obtaining a visa.
In this article, we will present information about two of our partner insurance providers, HEYME and STUDCORP, giving you the option to choose the one that best suits your needs. It’s important to note that once you receive your social security number, your private health insurance becomes complementary health insurance (you need to them them your certificate). To learn more about complementary health insurance read this article.
Why subscribe to a private health insurance?
- If you arrive before the beginning of your classes/Ph.D., you won’t be covered by the social security
- To be covered more than the 70% of the social security ( 70% based on the prices practiced by the doctors from sector 1 that respect the prices’ limits of the government). Private health insurance refunds you around 90 to 100% on real costs spent (which means you can go on doctors from sector 1 and 2).
- If your visa center asks for one
- Mandatory for a student short stay or intern visa
Why subscribe to a private health insurance in France?
- They refund you if your visa is refused and if your insurance has not started yet. That’s why it’s important to make it starts min 2 weeks AFTER your visa appointment, to receive the answer for your request BEFORE the beginning of the insurance.
- It will transform into a complementary, linked with your social security n°, as soon as you receive it one.
Tips for choosing between the two partners:
1. Private insurance: financially Stucorp is more advantageous, for a subscription for 4 months (40€ per month instead of 44€ with Heyme). If you subscribe for less than 4 months, Heyme is more advantageous.
Complementary insurance: after your arrival in France, you will obtain a social security number (if you make the request) and will have to request a complementary insurance. Studcorp keeps the same prices but Heyme goes to €34 for the same offer. So from 5 months Studcorp becomes more advantageous (32€ vs 34€) than Heyme.
2. Studcorp only allows one-time payment (or 3 times if you pay an extra fee) while Heyme offers monthly payment. So it depends on your financial possibilities.
3. Studcorp covers you at 100% on real costs spent instead of 90% at Heyme (or 100% if hospital), as explained in the table.
To know: In the table we keep it simple: hospitalization and doctor covered by social security but note if your act is not covered by social security, private and complementary insurance will not reimburse except in exceptional circumstances. This is why if you have specific needs (chronic deases, issue with your theeth or eyes…) you should contact both, to have more information about those coverage and compare.
